Dear Parents/Guardians, November 12, 2008

We are writing this letter to you in regards to your child’s Social Studies/Language Arts project. The students chose their Islander, that they wanted to research, on October 28, 2008 and we are concerned that not enough work has been completed by some students. It has been brought to our attention that many students are working on their projects at home. While this is great that there is help being given at home, we would like the students to bring all of their work to school tomorrow. We need to assess where each student is at on the project as the due date, for the good copy of the written biography, is November 17, 2008. We have been giving time, in class, for the students to work on their projects and are concerned that the class time is not being used wisely. If you could also ask your child how their project is going, that would be greatly appreciated. Any concerns please feel free to contact us.

To Parents of 6A Students

Your child’s class is beginning a mathematics unit on decimals.

Students encounter decimals every day in school and in the world around them.


They use decimals as they spend their allowance, measure objects in metric units, read the nutrition information on food packages, and use calculators.

In this unit, your child will:

·        Represent, read, and write decimals to thousandths.

·        Represent, compare, and order decimals.

·        Round decimals.

·        Estimate decimal sums, differences, products, and quotients.

·        Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to thousandths.

·        Pose and solve problems involving decimal operations.

·        Select operations and solve multistep problems.

Here are some activities you can do with your child to support her or his learning.

·        Have your child look through newspapers for examples of large numbers written in decimal form (for example, 2.5 million),then write the numbers in standard form.

·        Have your child measure the length of an object and report the measure in metres, decimetres, centimetres, and millimetres.

·        Ask your child to estimate the total cost of 3 or more different items, then to estimate the change from a given amount.

·        Given the cost of a package of 3 items, have your child estimate the cost of one.
